In September 2009, anticipating numerous H1N1 (Swine Flu) related deaths in Aboriginal communities, Health Canada delivered dozens of body bags to several First Nations communities. Aboriginal leaders were outraged and confused by Health Canada's response to First Nations communities who had requested resources to fight a second wave of the H1N1 outbreak. Instead of adequate preventative measures, like medicine, the disproportionate arrival of body bags sent a chilling message, with historical reverberations, to Aboriginal people across the continent.

Aboriginal people are too familiar with the devastation of infectious diseases and the deliberate attempts to remove them from existence. In the 18th century, British soldiers in North America concocted the diabolical scheme to decimate Aboriginal people with blankets infected with smallpox as part of a war effort.

George Catlin (1796–1872), in his observations of the Berdashe (Aboriginal male inhabiting the female role), wished for a selective extinction in Aboriginal America.

I drew inspiration from these contemporary and historical events to fashion a beautiful body bag, in the shape of a bison hide, from a queen-size red Hudson Bay blanket and a life-size image of myself as the Berdashe — Miss Chief Eagle Testickle. By making the body bag into an object of exquisite beauty, I give a transcendent and resilient response to a long history of violence directed toward First Nations. If Health Canada is shipping us Aboriginals body bags, then I want to design my own Queen-Size Body Bag!

Fashioned from a raccoon hat once belonging to the late Toronto film critic Jay Scott, this jockstrap forms the lower half of a costume worn in a performance at the Drake Hotel in 2005. The costume “Trapper’s Bride” is a peignoir worn by Miss Chief in the painting of the same name.

Monkman has used the Louis Vuitton brand to refer to social hierarchies and monopolies of class, power and wealth, established by trade among Europeans and Native Americans. Monkman has fashioned faux “Louis Vuitton” birch bark luggage (Boudoir de Berdashe), and an arrow quiver (Shooting Geronimo) that Miss Chief has worn in live performances and films.
